What if?

WHAT DOES THE QUESTION “WHAT IF?” CONJURE UP FOR YOU WHEN YOU FIRST HEAR IT?

We asked our team, friends and family their thoughts. There was a mixed response of fear, regret, more questions, getting out of the comfort zone and excitement.

  • What if? Could be unchangeable regrets or missed opportunities.

  • What if? Could be the expectation of things that could go wrong.

One of our team shared this quote from a poem:

“There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask "What if I fall?"
Oh but my darling,What if you fly?”

― Erin Hanson

But most responses focussed on the positives the possibilities:

  • What if I try this?

  • What if I do that?

  • What if I did x, y, or z?

  • 'What If' is a statement that can make you feel encouraged and open minded.

  • We’ve always done it like this, but what if….?

Looking at our current challenges as opportunities and potential:

  • Could life be better? What could I change?

  • What if I had more control over my time?

  • What if I could have more confidence?

  • What if I had more space to think?

  • What if I had more clarity?

  • What if I could rest more effectively?

  • What if it could be better?

WHAT IF YOU COULD BE 1% BETTER?

Our founder has just finished reading the book Atomic Habits. Where author James Clear outlines a revolutionary way to get 1% better every day. He calls this the 1 Percent Rule.

1 PERCENT RULE

“The 1 Percent Rule states that over time the majority of the rewards in a given field will accumulate to the people, teams, and organizations that maintain a 1 percent advantage over the alternatives. You don't need to be twice as good to get twice the results. You just need to be slightly better.”

—James Clear, Atomic Habits.

Here are some of his tips of how to create good habits and break bad habits:

HOW TO CREATE GOOD HABITS:

  • Make it obvious.

  • Make it attractive.

  • Make it easy.

  • Make it satisfying.

HOW TO BREAK BAD HABITS:

  • Make it invisible.

  • Make it difficult.

  • Make it unsatisfying.

OTHER TIPS ON HOW LITTLE CHANGES CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE:

  • Start your day in a way which will set you up for the rest of the day, (a way which works for you.)

  • Have one main aim or intention for the day, a priority.

  • Give yourself space to think - at least 90mins a day of deep work with no distractions.

  • Finish your day so you get the best rest and good nights sleep.

  • Reflection and switching off can really help with this.

THE BEST WAY TO MAKE “WHAT IF?” WORK FOR YOU IS TAKING THE TIME TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS.

  • Asking yourself ‘what do you want?’

  • What are the obstacles?

  • How can you get there?

  • What are the possibilities?

  • What’s the opportunity?

  • Turning What if? Into Why not?

And thinking about What if? in the present, we love this quote:

“What if today we were just grateful for everything”

— Charlie Brown
